Lee Janzen was disqualified Monday from his U.S. Open sectional qualifier for wearing steel spikes.
The two-time U.S. Open champion shot 75 in the first round at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., and was disqualified before the second round.
GolfChannel.com obtained a copy of a letter sent to contestants of the Woodmont qualifier and the second item reads "Spikes: Steel spikes are not permitted for the qualifying rounds or for practice rounds. It is a condition at all qualifying sites, unless otherwise indicated by an asterisk on the entry application …"

The final line of that entry says "Penalty for breach of the condition: Disqualification."
Qualifiers in Columbus, Ohio, Memphis, Tenn., and Springfield, Ohio each have a condition of competition allowing steel spikes.
Janzen, 48, won the U.S. Open in 1993 and 1998 and last played in the championship in 2008, when he missed the cut at Torrey Pines. He tweeted the following response:
