By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM Just when it looked like Thomas Bjorn would be the story of the opening round, 20-year-old Tom Lewis enters the picture with a 65 to share the lead and steal the spotlight. Lewis’ score is the lowest ever by an amateur in the Open Championship, where he is also the first amateur to lead this tournament since 1968. “I was just happy to get the drive off the tee on the first,” Lewis said. “Shooting 65 isn’t something I would have imagined.” A quarterfinalist in the British Amateur, Lewis, who will turn pro later this year, was nothing short of spectacular in benign conditions in the afternoon. In all, he made seven birdies, including four in a row over his final five holes, and just two bogeys. Lewis, who perhaps not coincidentally was named after five-time British Open champ Tom Watson, also had a dozen one-putts . “I didn’t have a target in my head,” Lewis added. “I was just nervous about hitting the first tee shot.” This isn’t the first time Lewis has been brilliant, though. In his junior days he won the Boys’ Amateur Championship in 2009. Where did he do so? Yep, Royal St. George’s.
