Anthony Kim and Francesco Molinari put it in play at the end of the 2010 season. John Cook used the club to win the season-opening event on the Champions Tour this year and again two weeks ago. And the VR Pro was in the bag of Venezuela rookie sensation Jhonattan Vegas when he captured the Bob Hope Classic at the end of January. Vegas averaged 309 yards off the tee over the five rounds of the Hope, each of which he scored in the 60s. And on two of those rounds he hit the fairway every time he hit his driver. Available in four lofts (8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5) and with a Project X stock shaft, the VR Pro driver features a pear-shaped head that gives it a more traditional look at address and allows for more weight at the optimal center of gravity locations, delivering a hotter launch with optimal spin. Nike has also re-engineered a compression channel on the sole that is designed to increase speed at impact in more places on the clubface. The channel extends the entire length of the face and is designed to produce greater distance on a variety of shots, whether it’s low draws or high fades. The idea is to provide players with the ability to work their shots as they so desire – and to do so with greater accuracy. “The compression channel was designed to give tour players increased ball speeds for their ‘go-to’ shots, and these shots are not always in the center of the clubface,” says Tom Stites, director of product creation at Nike Golf. “The channel action delivers a similar ball speed as the center of the face.” The VR Pro driver also expands upon Nike Golf’s STR8-FIT face angle technology, allowing golfers to select their shot shapes as well as the flexibility to pick the looks they like best. All told, the hosel on this club boasts 32 different settings.
